Superposition

Principle of superposition: whenever a linear system is driven by more than one independent source of energy, the total response (voltage and current) is the sum of the individual responses.

Note: Does NOT work for power (because power is not a linear system)

Steps

  1. Deactivate all but one independent source
  2. Use any analysis to solve for the desired current or voltage
  3. Repeat 1 and 2 for each independent source
  4. Sum all the results

Deactivated Sources

  • Voltage short (wire)
  • Current open (no connection)
  • Open Circuits
