The Mesh-Current Method (Mesh Analysis)

Steps

  1. Identify all the meshes (any loop that starts and end at the same node and does not have any other loops in it)
  2. Label all mesh currents
    • a branch current is different than a mesh current
    • make all the mesh currents clockwise (or at least the same direction)
  3. Write KVL equations for each mesh as a function of mesh currents
  4. Solve the system of equations for the mesh currents

  • Current source unique to one mesh The mesh’s current is the source value
  • Current source shared by two meshes Create super mesh
